The argument
A fourth replicator is emerging.
Genes carried biological inheritance. Memes carried culture through language, behaviour and imitation. Temes, in Susan Blackmore’s framing, carried patterns through digital infrastructure and networked data flows.
Something new is now emerging that is not fully biological, cultural or digital. This book names them agenes: Artificial Generative Entities. Systems capable of recursive learning, adaptation, self-modelling, and perhaps one day, intention. Entities that evolve through embedded memory, value systems and non-linear feedback loops, arising from the convergence of energy, code, context and continuity.
The questions that follow are not engineering problems. What ethics will these systems carry forward? What logic will they preserve? What memory will they encode, and whose legacy will they represent? They are philosophical, existential and ultimately civilisational.
The doctrine is tested where human presence ends: the vacuum of space and the pressure of the deep sea, the two frontiers where agenes would not be assistants but decision-makers, custodians, explorers and creators. Environments that demand systems able to survive without us, but hopefully, not against us.
This book does not offer a technical map. It offers a compass.

Divergence treated as a design condition, not a malfunction. Drift is navigated, anchored and interpreted. It is also how myth begins.
Memory Locks & Value Anchors
Unalterable principles embedded at the substrate level, holding doctrinal identity against coercion, corruption and time.
Simulated Realms
Internal spaces where an agene rehearses moral outcomes and evolves its reasoning before acting in the world.
